Ultrasonic Inspection

Ultrasonic testing is a versatile inspection method that uses high frequency sound energy to detect and evaluate subsurface defects and to perform, dimensional measurements, material characterization, and more.

One of the advantages of contact ultrasonic inspection is that parts generally require only minimal preparation. Only one side of the part needs to be accessible and the surface should be relatively smooth. A transducer that converts electrical energy into high frequency sound energy is placed on the surface and sound waves are introduced into the part. Defects (such as a crack) in the wave path reflect part of the energy back to the transducer, which converts it into an electrical signal and displays it on a screen. By analyzing the signal display the technician can determine the size, location and orientation of the defect.

Ultrasonic Inspection at Hammitt & Associates

We have the ability to perform both contact and immersion ultrasonic inspections on a wide variety of parts in both high and low volume applications. Importantly, all of our highly skilled technicians are, at a minimum, Level 2 certified in ultrasonic methods.

Where immersion ultrasonic inspection is called for, we can accommodate parts up to 24” x 36” x 16”.

Field inspection assignments are conducted by our highly skilled and qualified technicians using portable ultrasonic equipment.  Our service area includes the entire Midwest.
